Guest Conductor: Fred Gramann

What began for Fred and his wife Nancy as a 9-month stint in Paris for Fred to study with organists Marie-Claire Alain and Maurice Duruflé evolved into a lifetime musical adventure in the city of light. Director of Music at the American Church in Paris for the past 41 years, Fred counts among his handbell highlights being the Honorary Associate Director of the Raleigh Ringers, the director for UK Bronze and most recently the newly appointed director for the Bay View Week of Handbells, succeeding Maestros Donald E. Allured and Carl Wiltse. Last autumn Fred was guest director for festivals in the UK and Scotland celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain, and was recently director for DB West (Oregon) and Bronzefest (Ohio). Fred earned organ performance degrees at Syracuse University and the University of Michigan. Nancy worked for 3M France for 28 years as a language teacher and cross-cultural coach.

Opening Concert: Quadrants

Quadrants is a professional handbell quartet based in Princeton, NJ. The members of Quadrants – Robert James Lamb, Bethan Neely, Raymond Nugent, and Hyosang Park – are all professional musicians in their own rights, as well as proud alumni of Westminster Choir College and the Westminster Concert Bell Choir. Quadrants is dedicated to performing high level repertoire with musicality and precision, and frequently performs their own original transcriptions of classical masterworks. Quadrants was honored to perform at the 2019 Handbell Musicians of America National Seminar in St Louis, MO, and also performs regularly throughout New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.

First-time attendees are invited to apply for a scholarship to attend the Spring Festival. Applications are due by March 17, 2022.

Associate Conductor Program

Are you a conductor interested in working with massed handbell ensembles? Please consider applying for Area 5’s Associate Conductor Program. Our goal for this program is to identify, train, and nurture potential new conductors for massed ringing events throughout Area 5.

The 2019 Associate Conductor Patty Saunders said, “The [Associate Conductor] program supported and stretched my abilities as a director and I walked away from the weekend with a tool box useful in rehearsal planning and execution, conducting clarity, and artistic expression.”
